Why This Program Exists
Calhoun County Treasurer Melinda Weaver says the biggest problem for first-time homebuyers is saving enough money for a down payment.
"For so many people, the barrier is the down payment funds," says Maggie Harma Justin from Independent Bank.
This program takes money from foreclosures and uses it to help new people buy homes instead. The county put $3 million into a special account, and the interest from that money pays for these grants.
Other Counties Have This Too
Independent Bank runs similar programs in Oakland County and Kalamazoo County. The Oakland County program ran out of money fast because so many people wanted to use it.
That shows how helpful these programs are for people who want to buy homes.
