Cleveland Seniors Can Get Home Repairs Through New $9 Million Grant Program

Cleveland, Ohio homeowners — especially seniors — are getting help through a new $9 million grant program from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati.

The money will fund nearly 800 affordable housing units across the Greater Cleveland area, including repairs for seniors who are already living in their homes and want to stay there.

What the Money Is Going Toward

Five projects are receiving funding:

  • Community Housing Solutions Home Repair Program — $6,000,000 for 565 homes
  • Hough Senior Independent Living — $1,200,000 for 55 senior units
  • Lorain Avenue Redevelopment — $1,008,000 for 72 units
  • Cleveland Heights Senior Housing — $1,000,000 for 75 units
  • Famicos Home Repair Program — $202,000 for 20 senior homes

Focus on Seniors Aging in Place

A big part of this funding is for seniors who want to stay in their own homes. The Famicos Foundation, which received $202,000, specializes in keeping seniors in their current homes by making critical repairs.

Carolyn Dawson with the Famicos Foundation says the need is urgent. "Seniors want to age in place, and they deserve to age in place," she said.

Many of the homes being repaired have old systems that have been patched over the years. Common repairs include:

  • Roof replacement
  • Furnaces and HVAC systems
  • Electrical upgrades
  • Porch repairs
  • Hot water tanks

Each repair project costs around $25,000 on average.
