Illinois Homeowners Can Get $2,500 Back for Installing a Home EV Charger in 2026

Do you drive an electric vehicle — or are you thinking about getting one? If you live in northern Illinois, you may be able to get $2,500 back just for installing a home charger.

What's the rebate?

ComEd, Illinois's largest electric utility, has set aside $4 million in 2026 specifically for homeowners to get a rebate when they buy and install a residential EV charging unit (also called a Level 2 charger) at their home.

The rebate covers the cost of the charger and the installation — up to $2,500 per household.

Who qualifies?

To be eligible, you must be a ComEd residential customer in northern Illinois. The rebate is part of ComEd's 2026 Beneficial Electrification (BE) Plan, which runs through 2028.

Priority is given to residents in Equity Investment Eligible Communities (EIEC) — areas throughout Illinois identified as needing extra investment. Last year, ComEd aimed for 50% of funds to go to these communities. They actually hit almost 80%.

How do I apply?

Disbursement of 2026 funds began at the start of the year. To claim your rebate:

  • Visit comed.com and look for the Beneficial Electrification rebate programs
  • Purchase and install a qualifying Level 2 EV charger
  • Submit your rebate application through ComEd's portal

Act quickly — the $4 million in residential rebates is first-come, first-served and can run out before year end.

Why get a home EV charger?

Home charging is much cheaper per mile than public charging stations. A Level 2 charger can fully charge most electric vehicles overnight. With $2,500 in rebates, the out-of-pocket cost for a charger and installation can drop to nearly zero for many homeowners.

Is there a deadline?

Funds are available in 2026 only, so this is time-sensitive. Once the $4 million is claimed, the rebate program closes for the year.
