Covenant Homeownership Program Enlists HomeSight Leader Darryl Smith for Oversight Role
HomeSight, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering equitable homeownership and economic opportunities, has proudly announced a significant milestone in its journey. The organization's Executive Director, Darryl Smith, has been appointed by Governor Jay Inslee to serve on the Oversight Committee for the groundbreaking Covenant Homeownership Program (CHP). This appointment marks a significant achievement for HomeSight, which played a pivotal role in advocating for the legislation that established the CHP.
The CHP stands as a first-of-its-kind initiative in the nation, designed to address and rectify the long-standing economic disparities caused by historically racially discriminatory housing policies. This program is a testament to the concerted efforts of various stakeholders committed to reversing the adverse effects of such policies on communities of color.
Darryl Smith's involvement in the creation of the CHP was instrumental. Collaborating closely with the Black Home Initiative Network and the Housing Development Consortium, Smith actively participated in the legislative process. He provided compelling testimony before the Senate Ways and Means Committee, advocating for the legislation that eventually led to the formation of the CHP.
Reflecting on the collective efforts that brought the Covenant Homeownership Act into being, Smith expressed deep gratitude and honor at being selected to serve on the committee. "So many people and organizations, including HomeSight, worked tirelessly to bring the Covenant Homeownership Act to fruition," Smith remarked. "I am deeply honored by this opportunity to help ensure the CHP makes a profound impact on black homeownership in Washington state."
The CHP, which is managed by the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, introduces a specialized credit program. This program is specifically tailored to provide down payment and closing cost assistance to demographic groups that have historically suffered economic harm due to discriminatory housing practices. The initiative represents a significant step towards leveling the playing field in homeownership and creating equitable economic opportunities.
In his new role on the Oversight Committee, Smith is committed to ensuring that the CHP operates efficiently and effectively. His goal is to facilitate the creation of new black homeowners in Washington, thereby contributing to the broader mission of reversing the legacy of housing discrimination and fostering a more equitable society.
Smith's appointment to the Oversight Committee is not just a personal achievement but also a beacon of hope for many who have been marginalized by systemic housing inequalities. It signifies a move towards more inclusive and fair housing policies, with the potential to create lasting change in communities across Washington state.
