Do you own a home in Crookston, Minnesota? You may be able to get up to $25,000 to fix it up — for free.

The city is offering money through the Small Cities Development Grant program. This is a forgivable loan, which means you don't have to pay it back if you meet the requirements.

What does the money cover?

You can use the grant for major repairs like:

  • Roof replacement
  • New windows and doors
  • Furnace repairs
  • Plumbing and electrical fixes
  • Siding replacement
  • Foundation repairs

The program is for repairs that go beyond basic maintenance. You can't use it for general remodeling — only fixing things that are broken or deteriorated.

Who qualifies?

You must:

  • Own and live in your home (primary residence)
  • Live in the eligible area of Crookston (see map on application)
  • Meet income requirements

Income limits:

  • 1 person: $53,600/year
  • 2 people: $61,250/year
  • 3 people: $68,900/year
  • 4 people: $76,550/year
  • 5 people: $82,700/year
  • 6 people: $88,800/year
  • 7 people: $94,950/year
  • 8+ people: $101,050/year

How to apply:

Contact the Northwest Community Action Agency (NWCAA). They are accepting applications now.

This is federal money designed to help low- and moderate-income families keep their homes safe and in good condition. If your home needs major repairs and you can't afford them, this program could be the answer.

Don't wait — funds are limited and applications are first-come, first-served.
