Detroit Housing Program: A Game-Changer in Homeownership for Families
Since its launch in 2017, Detroit's Make It Home program has been a lifeline for families grappling with the possibility of losing their homes due to tax-related foreclosures. So far, the program has kept 1,500 Detroit families securely housed, and this year alone, more than 100 families are reaping its benefits. Demetrius Brown, a father of three girls, underscored the program's significance. "It's crucial to have a stable, safe home for my children," Brown expressed.
So, how does Make It Home work its magic? The journey begins when the city acquires the property facing tax foreclosure before it even goes to auction. Next, the United Community Housing Coalition (UCHC) steps in and purchases the property, thanks to funding from the Rocket Community Fund. But here's the kicker: UCHC then sells the property back to the occupant under a 0% interest land contract that includes a manageable payment plan.
Laura Grannemann, the Rocket Community Fund Executive Director, emphasizes the additional layers of support that come with the program. "Families also receive assistance to apply for homeowner’s property tax exemptions, further stabilizing their living conditions," she said. On top of that, Make It Home offers grants and low-interest loans designed to cover the cost of any essential home repairs, eliminating yet another financial hurdle for homeowners.
One participant, Jerel Joubert, had been renting his home for nearly two decades when the threat of foreclosure loomed large. Before joining the Make It Home program, Joubert was on the brink of leaving the community he'd been a part of for so long. "Staying in this home means that I'm a part of this community, and that's priceless," he reflected.
In essence, the Make It Home program isn't just about keeping a roof over people’s heads; it's about cementing community bonds, fostering financial security, and providing a stable environment for families. By doing so, it not only changes individual lives but also strengthens the entire fabric of the Detroit community.
