READING, PA — In the wake of the devastating floods in July that impacted Berks County, Governor Josh Shapiro recently announced a pivotal development aimed at helping the community recover. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has officially recognized the severity of the situation and has issued an administrative disaster declaration. This declaration is a beacon of hope, as it paves the way for loans to be made available to affected businesses and homeowners in Berks County. Additionally, residents in neighboring counties, which include Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, and Schuylkill, may also qualify for this much-needed assistance.

Governor Shapiro recounted his immediate visit to Berks County following the floods, stating, “During my visit, I met with local officials and community members, listening to their concerns and witnessing firsthand the devastation. I assured them then that my Administration was committed to their recovery. Collaborating with our federal counterparts to secure access to these low-interest loans is a step forward in our promise. These loans are designed to help businesses and homeowners manage and overcome unexpected losses, and we will continue to coordinate with both local and federal agencies to see Berks County through its recovery journey.”

Echoing Governor Shapiro's sentiments, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan expressed her concern for the community, saying, “The floods wreaked havoc on our community earlier this summer, and the after-effects are still palpable. Recognizing the urgency, I advocated for federal assistance, ensuring that the residents of Berks had the support structures they needed. I am grateful that the SBA has responded positively to our joint efforts, offering low-interest loans to homeowners and small business owners across southeastern Pennsylvania. These loans are crucial for the rehabilitation of our community and the sustenance of our small businesses. My office and I remain devoted to collaborating with federal and state entities to bring relief to our residents.”

In the aftermath of the floods, Governor Shapiro was quick to show his support, visiting the affected areas in Berks County. He took the time to assess the damage and engage with local officials, formulating a recovery plan. Ever since the floods struck, the Shapiro Administration has maintained an open line of communication with Berks County officials. Among the immediate actions taken were instructions to PennDOT to ensure roads and bridges were safe and clear for use. Moreover, the administration, in collaboration with the county, established a multi-agency resource center to streamline assistance. Recognizing the importance of education, Governor Shapiro also directed the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to collaborate with local schools, ensuring that educational standards are met and children are taught in a safe environment.
