Florida Homeowners Opt for Minimum Insurance Coverage Amid Skyrocketing Premiums

In West Palm Beach, Florida, rising insurance premiums are pushing homeowners to make some tough decisions about their coverage. One resident, Dan, who resides in the Sunshine Park neighborhood, chose to cancel certain aspects of his insurance entirely.

"A few years back, the cost for wind coverage alone skyrocketed to $5,000. It just wasn't feasible anymore," Dan shared. He advises, "Keep the money you would have spent on premiums in the bank. That's your self-insurance fund. Use it exclusively for what it's meant for—emergencies."

Dan has been able to make this decision largely because he has no mortgage on his home, a primary factor in insurance requirements. Additionally, he's made upgrades to his property such as installing impact-resistant windows and reinforcing the roof, thereby reducing his risk profile.

Insurance agent Robert Norberg of Arden Insurance in Lantana adds that he encounters several clients with the same mindset as Dan. "Many homeowners feel that after paying off their mortgage and taking preventive measures like fortifying their homes, the risk of making a claim is a gamble they're willing to take," he explains.

While the idea of going 'bare' on insurance may sound tempting, Norberg strongly advises against it unless you have substantial financial reserves. "If you choose to go without coverage, make sure you have enough money saved up to replace your home in case of a total loss," he cautions.

Norberg recommends that homeowners looking to save on insurance explore other avenues. "I usually advise my clients to consider options like taking higher deductibles or customizing their plans to include only essential coverage," he says. "The key is to strike a balance between affordable premiums and adequate protection. Even with a paid-off mortgage and a fortified home, catastrophe coverage should not be compromised."

This trend is not isolated to West Palm Beach; it's a developing pattern that could have wider implications as insurance premiums continue to climb, forcing homeowners nationwide to evaluate their coverage options carefully.
