Florida Homeowners: Get Grant Money to Hurricane-Proof Your Roof Through My Safe Florida Home

Florida homeowners can get grant money to protect their homes from hurricanes through the state's My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program.

The program focuses on helping homeowners make improvements that reduce storm damage — and can also lower your home insurance premiums.

How the Program Works

Here's the step-by-step process:

  1. Apply to the program at the My Safe Florida Home website
  2. Get a free inspection — a program inspector evaluates your home's wind-related components and identifies recommended upgrades
  3. Review your report — the inspection produces a list of recommended improvements (like roof reinforcements, hurricane straps, or shutters)
  4. Get contractor estimates for the approved work
  5. Complete the work with a participating contractor
  6. Final verification confirms the work is done
  7. Receive grant funds to offset what you paid

What Improvements Qualify

The program focuses on wind mitigation, including:

  • Roof covering upgrades (stronger materials)
  • Roof deck attachments
  • Roof-to-wall connections (hurricane clips/straps)
  • Opening protection (shutters, hurricane-rated windows and doors)

Why This Matters for Insurance

Beyond the grant money, these upgrades can significantly lower your homeowners insurance premium. Florida insurers are required by law to give discounts for hurricane mitigation improvements — often saving hundreds of dollars per year.
