Indiana's Homeowner Assistance Fund Portal to Close Soon
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Homeowner Assistance Fund (IHAF), the state's vital mortgage assistance program, is preparing to close its application portal on October 20th. IHAF's inception stemmed from a grant under the American Rescue Plan, guided by the US Department of the Treasury. Since its launch in February 2022, IHAF has been a lifeline for numerous Hoosier households, providing them with an average of over $13,000 in assistance. This support has come in various forms, including mortgage reinstatement, ongoing mortgage payments, relief for delinquent property taxes, homeowner's insurance, and homeowner association fees. Importantly, these benefits have been available exclusively for the homeowner's primary residence.
A Beacon of Support Amidst Challenges - IHAF's mission has been to assist Indiana homeowners with low to moderate incomes who have faced financial hardships stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The program's impact has been significant, with more than 9,100 Hoosier households benefiting from its provisions. This support has been instrumental in helping these families weather the economic challenges brought about by the pandemic.
Moving Toward the End of an Era - As IHAF approaches the culmination of its current phase, it is poised to achieve a remarkable milestone. With the substantial amount of assistance already disbursed, the funds earmarked for upcoming payments, and the ongoing processing of applications, IHAF is nearing the distribution of the total available funds allocated for homeowner assistance.
Transitioning to a Waiting List - Following the portal's closure for active applications, IHAF will transition to managing a waiting list for homeowners eager to apply for new funds as they become available. It's important to note that all existing program eligibility requirements will remain in effect for future applicants and awardees. The program remains committed to its core mission of supporting those with low to moderate incomes who have been adversely affected by the pandemic.
Awards Designed for Long-Term Relief - IHAF's assistance takes the form of a 5-year forgivable, interest-free loan. This means that homeowners receive not just immediate relief but also a manageable pathway to stability over the long term.
While IHAF's application portal is closing, the spirit of assistance and hope it represents will persist. For Indiana homeowners facing financial challenges due to the pandemic, IHAF remains a beacon of support, offering a brighter future as they navigate these uncertain times.
