Iowa Offers $5,000 Homeownership Grants for Military Members and Veterans

Iowa active-duty service members, veterans, and some surviving spouses can apply for a $5,000 grant to help with a home purchase.

What the grant pays for

The Iowa Finance Authority Military Homeownership Assistance Program gives eligible buyers a $5,000 grant. The money can help with a down payment and closing costs.

The grant can also be used with other Iowa Finance Authority homeownership programs, including FirstHome and Homes for Iowans, if the buyer qualifies.

Who can qualify

  • Active-duty service members or veterans with at least 90 total days of active duty during eligible service periods.
  • Federally recognized injured service members who served during those periods.
  • Some surviving spouses of qualified service members.
  • The home must be in Iowa and used as the buyer’s main home within 60 days of closing.

Application window

Reservations opened July 1, 2026. Funding is first come, first served and depends on availability.
