Free Money for a Stronger Roof in Kentucky

If you live in Kentucky, you can now apply for a grant of up to $10,000 to make your roof stronger and better able to survive severe weather. The Strengthen Kentucky Homes (SKH) program opened its application portal on March 1, 2026, and is already receiving applications from across the state.

Why This Program Exists

Kentucky has experienced 15 federally declared weather disasters in the last six years. Governor Andy Beshear signed the program into law in April 2024 as part of House Bill 256, with $5 million in initial funding. The goal is simple: help Kentucky homeowners build back stronger before the next storm hits.

"This program will help Kentuckians strengthen their homes, providing families peace of mind when the next severe weather hits. Even better, it will also help them save money at a time folks need it most," Governor Beshear said.

How Much Can You Get?

Eligible homeowners can receive grants of up to $10,000 to install a "fortified roof" system. A fortified roof is specifically designed to stand up to the kind of storms that damage or destroy ordinary roofs.

What Does a Fortified Roof Include?

A fortified roof upgrade typically includes all of the following:

  • Stronger roof edges — prevents wind from lifting roofing materials away
  • Sealed roof deck — limits water damage if shingles blow off
  • Ring-shank nails — much harder for wind to pull loose than standard nails
  • Impact-resistant shingles — can handle hail up to 2 inches in diameter

A Bonus: Lower Insurance Premiums

"Across the country, insurers are rewarding more resilient building by lowering premiums," said Sharon P. Clark, Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Insurance. That means a fortified roof could reduce your homeowner's insurance costs too.

How to Apply

Go to SKH.ky.gov to submit your application. The portal is open now. More than 150 applications have already been submitted since the program launched. Contractors and evaluators interested in becoming certified providers can also find information at that website.
