LA County Cities Score Big with Federal Housing and Development Grants
In a game-changing move for housing and community development, Los Angeles County agencies have been awarded a whopping $136 million through three major grant programs administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The federal agency made the big announcement earlier this week, and it's got people talking.
Diving into the specifics, Los Angeles city and Long Beach emerged as the top recipients, with grants amounting to $84 million and approximately $8.8 million, respectively. But that's not all for LA. The city also received an additional $24,017,909 from a fourth HUD initiative—Housing Opportunities for Persons With HIV/AIDS (HOPWA), bringing its total to an eye-popping sum. On the county level, Los Angeles County didn't fall too far behind, raking in about $32.5 million in federal funding.
The grants have been dispersed through three key HUD programs: The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, and the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG). These programs are designed to inject much-needed capital into projects for community development, affordable housing, and emergency assistance for the homeless.
Pasadena also had a reason to celebrate, receiving the third-highest grant total among L.A. County cities—$3.2 million to be precise. And the good news doesn't stop there. The awarded cities span the entirety of the county, reaching every corner from Compton to Lancaster.
This substantial financial support from the federal government is more than just a windfall; it's an investment in the future of the community. The funds are expected to give a significant boost to a range of projects that aim to make housing more affordable, develop community infrastructure, and provide assistance to those most in need. In a time when many are grappling with housing insecurity and community resources are stretched thin, this massive influx of funding serves as a much-needed lifeline.
