Louisiana Fortify Homes: Get $10,000 for Roof Upgrades

Louisiana homeowners can get up to $10,000 to make their roofs stronger. The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program helps protect homes from hurricanes and storms.

Why Louisiana Needs This Program

Louisiana gets hit by many tropical storms. The state sees nearly 19% of all hurricanes in America. That ranks third highest in the country.

These storms cost homeowners lots of money. Home values go down. Insurance prices go way up. In 2024, Louisiana saw a 38% jump in home insurance costs.

How Much Money Can You Get?

The program gives up to $10,000 per home. The money pays for a new roof that meets special standards.

Your new roof must meet the Fortified Roof Standard. This is set by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. These roofs are built to handle strong winds and storms.

Lower Insurance Costs

After you get your new roof, you receive special paperwork. This documentation can help you get lower insurance premiums. Your insurance company may give you a discount for having a stronger roof.

Who Can Apply?

You must meet these rules to qualify:

  • Own your home
  • Live in the home as your primary residence
  • Have home insurance with wind coverage
  • Have flood insurance (if required in your area)
  • Home must be structurally sound

What Homes Do NOT Qualify?

  • Mobile homes
  • Condos
  • Brand new buildings not yet lived in

How the Lottery Works

The program became so popular that Louisiana switched to a lottery system. You cannot just apply and get accepted right away.

Here is how it works:

  1. Submit your application during the open window
  2. Enter the lottery
  3. Wait to see if you are selected
  4. If chosen, you can get your roof upgrade

Application Windows

You can only apply during certain times. The program does not accept applications year-round. Watch for announcement of when the next application period opens.

The program gives priority to coastal areas. These homes are more likely to get hit by hurricanes.

How You Get Paid

You do not get a check in the mail. The state pays the roofing company directly. This ensures the money goes toward the roof upgrade.

If your roof costs more than $10,000, you pay the extra amount. The grant covers up to $10,000 only.

Program History

Louisiana launched the Fortify Homes Program in 2023. It is still running today. The program became popular very quickly, which is why they added the lottery system in 2024.

Why This Matters

A strong roof protects your entire home. It keeps water out during storms. It prevents wind damage. And it can save you money on insurance.

Many homeowners delay roof repairs because they cost too much. This program removes that barrier. It helps Louisianans protect their biggest investment—their home.
