Louisiana Homeowners Have Until Friday to Register for $10,000 Fortified Roof Grants
Louisiana homeowners have a short window to register for help with roof upgrades.
The Louisiana Department of Insurance is taking lottery registrations for the Fortify Homes Program until 5 p.m. Friday. Selected homeowners can get a grant of up to $10,000 to help pay for a fortified roof.
Who may qualify?
The current round is for homeowners in covered coastal areas. Newly added eligible parishes include Acadia, Iberville, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, and Washington. Some parts of Ascension, Calcasieu, Iberia, Livingston, St. Martin, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Vermilion are also now included.
Other covered parishes include Assumption, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary, and Terrebonne.
What the grant pays for
The grant can provide up to $10,000 toward a fortified roof. These roofs are built to better handle hurricane winds and may help lower home insurance costs.
Homeowners should know that the grant may not cover every cost. If selected, the homeowner may still need to pay for the fortified roof evaluation, permits, inspections, and any work that costs more than the grant amount.
How to register
Homeowners must create or use a profile on the Fortify Homes website and then register for the lottery. People who registered in an earlier round but were not picked must register again for this round.
Applicants should be ready to upload documents, including proof of homestead exemption and insurance policy documents. If the home is in a flood zone, flood insurance documents may also be needed.
Deadline
The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Friday. Homeowners can review the full rules and register at fortifyhomes.la.gov.
