Mahoning County, Ohio Offers Up to $500 for Backyard Conservation Projects

Mahoning County homeowners can apply for a small reimbursement grant to install approved backyard conservation or stormwater projects.

How much help is available?

The Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District offers reimbursement of up to $500 for approved Best Management Practices or conservation projects.

Who can qualify?

  • Residential homeowners are the main target group.
  • Homeowner associations, schools, places of worship, parks, nonprofits, and certain private or commercial properties may also apply.
  • State and federally owned properties are not eligible.
  • Projects cannot be used to satisfy regulatory requirements or active construction site requirements.

What can the money cover?

Eligible projects may include native trees and plants, rain gardens, wetland restoration, pervious pavers, rain barrels, and other approved stormwater practices.

How to apply

  1. Contact Mahoning SWCD to discuss the project.
  2. Submit the Site Assessment Checklist Form to the district.
  3. Work with SWCD staff on the design, materials, maintenance plan, and itemized cost.
  4. Wait for SWCD staff and board approval before installing the project.

Deadline or window: Approved applicants have until Dec. 1 to complete their project after approval.
