Maine Energy Assistance Program: A Lifeline Expands for Those in Need
LIVERMORE FALLS, Maine — Tens of thousands of Mainers grappling with the daunting challenge of utility bills can breathe a sigh of relief as the Maine Public Utility Commission (PUC) takes a significant step to bolster its low-income energy assistance program.
In Livermore Falls, the Ward family represents just one of many households caught in the financial struggle. Rising expenses, including mortgage payments, food costs, childcare, and utility bills for heating and electricity, have placed immense pressure on families, particularly with the onset of winter.
Raychel Ward, a member of the Ward family, expressed gratitude for the Maine PUC's decision to increase the low-income assistance program's funding from $15 million to $22.5 million over the next two years, a move that will directly impact her family's budget.
"With the cost of food, the ongoing CMP rate hikes, childcare expenses, or the challenge of finding childcare, we're patching together babysitters, which is both challenging and fun. It also makes it easier to afford necessary vehicle repairs," Ward shared.
Maine's public utility regulators anticipate that this additional funding will extend assistance to an estimated 46,000 more residents. PUC staff estimate that the average benefit could increase by as much as a third.
"For me, that's an extra $400 to $600 that I don't have to stress about allocating in my budget. It could mean getting new tires for my car or covering a whole month of groceries for our family," Ward emphasized.
Philip Bartlett, Chairman of the Maine PUC, characterized the additional funding as "real relief for those Mainers who are struggling most." He acknowledged the importance of such support, especially for those navigating the month while grappling with financial uncertainties.
Ward has an encouraging message for those facing hardship but hesitant to seek assistance. "There's no shame in asking, and you'd be surprised by the level of support available to you. Even if you doubt you qualify, go ahead and apply," she urged.
Bartlett highlighted that many people who may qualify for these programs are unaware of their eligibility. He encouraged those interested to reach out to their local community action program for more information.
The expansion of the low-income energy assistance program brings hope to Mainers facing the daunting challenges of rising utility costs, ensuring that they have the support they need during these trying times.
