Maryland Offers Up to $10,000 for Critical Home Repairs
Maryland just launched a new grant program that gives up to $10,000 to homeowners who need urgent home repairs. The WholeHome Critical Home Repairs program is first-come, first-served, so apply quickly before the money runs out.
What Is the WholeHome Program?
The WholeHome Critical Home Repairs program helps Maryland homeowners fix urgent health and safety problems in their homes. The program gives grants - not loans - so you never have to pay the money back.
The state set aside more than $3.5 million for this program through the Homeowner Assistance Fund.
How Much Can I Get?
Eligible homeowners can receive up to $10,000 for critical repairs. The exact amount depends on what repairs your home needs.
What Repairs Are Covered?
The grant can pay for urgent repairs that affect your health and safety, including:
- Roof replacement (for leaking roofs)
- Heating and cooling system fixes (like broken furnaces)
- Electrical repairs (for unsafe wiring)
- Plumbing repairs
- Mold or mildew removal
The program focuses on problems that could force you to leave your home if they're not fixed.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify for this grant, you must:
- Own a home in Maryland
- Have income at or below 150% of your county's area median income
- Have urgent health or safety repairs needed
How Do I Apply?
Applications opened on January 22, 2026 and will close when all the money is given out. Here's how to apply:
- Go to dhcd.maryland.gov/Energy-Home-Repair
- Fill out the application
- Submit it as soon as possible
Important: Applications are processed first-come, first-served. Don't wait to apply if you need help!
Why This Program Matters
According to Maryland Secretary of Housing Jake Day, many Maryland families face a tough choice: stay in a home that's falling apart, or move out because they can't afford repairs.
"For too many Marylanders, a leaking roof, a broken furnace, or unsafe electrical wiring can be the difference between staying in their home and being forced out," Day said. "By investing in these critical repairs, we're helping Maryland families remain safely housed in the communities they call home."
When Will the Money Run Out?
The state hasn't announced an application deadline, but they said the program will close when the money is gone. With $3.5 million available and up to $10,000 per household, the funding could run out quickly.
That means you should apply right away if you need help. The sooner you apply, the better your chances of getting funding before it's all claimed.
