Massachusetts Homeowners Can Save Thousands on Heat Pumps Through Mass Save Rebates

If you live in Massachusetts and heat your home with oil or gas, you could save thousands of dollars by switching to a heat pump — and the state's Mass Save® program will help pay for it.

Heat pump rebates in cities like Woburn, Framingham, and across the state can cover a big portion of what it costs to install a new heating and cooling system.

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a heating and cooling system that moves heat rather than creating it by burning fuel. In winter, it pulls heat from the outdoor air (even cold air) and moves it inside. In summer, it works in reverse, acting as an air conditioner.

Because heat pumps don't burn fuel, they're very efficient — and can lower your energy bills significantly over time.

How Much Can You Get Back?

Mass Save rebates vary based on your situation, but here's what's possible:

  • Standard installations: Several hundred to a few thousand dollars back
  • Whole-home conversions (replacing all fossil fuel heating): Higher-tier rebates available
  • Switching from oil or gas as your primary heat source: Largest rebates
  • Additional credits for smart thermostats and electrical panel upgrades

How to Qualify

To get the rebate:

  1. Start with a Mass Save No-Cost Home Energy Assessment — this is often required before getting rebates
  2. Your assessment evaluates insulation, air sealing, and your current heating system
  3. The heat pump you install must meet minimum efficiency standards (SEER/HSPF ratings)
  4. Installation must be done by a Mass Save approved contractor
  5. Submit required documentation within deadlines
