Mayor of Coronado Opposes State Affordable Housing Laws

During Saturday's Politifest event, Attorney General Rob Bonta hinted at an upcoming announcement regarding Coronado's failure to comply with state housing laws. Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey participated in a discussion on Sacramento v. Small Cities: The Housing Battle, shedding light on Coronado's history of defying affordable housing laws.

When asked if Coronado's leaders had made a good-faith effort to comply with state housing laws, Mayor Bailey responded affirmatively. He mentioned that they had submitted Housing Elements, although they were rejected by the state. However, he expressed optimism about an upcoming City Council decision on a Housing Element that would bring them into compliance.

Mayor Bailey raised a thought-provoking question about the definition of success in affordable housing. He pointed out the stark contrast in rent prices between Coronado and other areas, emphasizing the average rent of $3,700 in Coronado compared to $2,000 in El Cajon. He challenged the notion of making coastal housing affordable for households nationwide earning less than $75,000 per year and urged a clear definition of success in affordable housing.

When asked about the obligation of city governments to provide housing for different income levels, Mayor Bailey highlighted the role of the market in determining housing prices. He emphasized that local governments cannot control or set aside housing for specific income levels due to market realities. While zoning efforts can be made, the market's influence often outweighs these attempts.

Regarding the Housing Element, which aims to allocate housing for various income levels, Mayor Bailey expressed skepticism about its effectiveness in achieving desired results. He suggested that despite the city's efforts, market forces might still prevail.

Overall, the discussion between Attorney General Bonta and Mayor Bailey highlighted the complex challenges and market dynamics at play in achieving affordable housing in Coronado and similar coastal areas.
