Mecklenburg County Home Application Assistance Event: Free Property Tax Relief Clinic on April 30

GFH Editorial Team
June 15, 2023

Mecklenburg County homeowners who need help applying for property tax relief have a valuable opportunity coming up. The Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy is hosting a free, in-person Property Tax Relief Clinic on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at its offices at 5535 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, NC 28212. Staff attorneys and volunteers will walk eligible homeowners through the paperwork needed to claim North Carolina's most impactful property tax savings programs before the June 1, 2026 filing deadline.

This event is a critical resource because North Carolina's property tax relief programs are not automatic. You have to apply, and the forms can be confusing, especially for homeowners dealing with fixed incomes, disability documentation, or veterans' paperwork. Missing the June 1 deadline means waiting another full year.

Who Should Attend

The clinic is designed specifically for three groups of Mecklenburg County homeowners:

  • Low-income seniors age 65 or older
  • Homeowners who are totally and permanently disabled
  • Disabled veterans (or their unmarried surviving spouses)

If you fall into one of these categories and own and occupy your Mecklenburg County home as your primary residence, you are likely eligible for at least one of North Carolina's three major relief programs. The Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy team can also screen you on the spot to see which program saves you the most money.

What Programs the Clinic Covers

Clinic staff help you apply for the Elderly or Disabled Homestead Exclusion, which can exclude the greater of $25,000 or 50% of your home's appraised value from taxation for qualifying seniors and disabled homeowners. They also help with the Circuit Breaker Tax Deferment Program, which caps property taxes at a percentage of your income, and the Disabled Veteran Homestead Exclusion, which excludes up to $45,000 of appraised value for 100% service-connected disabled veterans. For many Mecklenburg households, these programs cut annual property tax bills by hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

What to Bring

To make the most of your appointment, bring the following documents:

  • Photo ID and proof of age (for senior applicants)
  • Proof of Mecklenburg County residence and homeownership (recent tax bill or deed)
  • Social Security or disability award letter, if applying under disability
  • VA disability rating letter, if applying as a disabled veteran
  • 2025 income documentation for all household members (Social Security statements, pension statements, 1099s, W-2s, tax returns)

Having these ready speeds up the process and helps the attorneys complete your application in a single visit.

How to Register

Appointments are required. Call 980-256-7952 to reserve an in-person slot for April 30. If you cannot travel to the Albemarle Road office, virtual appointments are also available, so homeowners across Mecklenburg County, from Davidson to Pineville, can still get help by phone or video.

Pair It With the HOMES Grant

Clinic attendees should also plan to apply for the Mecklenburg County HOMES program when it reopens for the next cycle, typically around July 1. HOMES provides economic assistance grants of up to roughly $650 countywide, with additional funding for Charlotte and Davidson residents that can push the total benefit over $1,000. Combining property tax relief with a HOMES grant is one of the most effective ways for longtime Mecklenburg homeowners to stay in their homes as values and tax bills continue to rise.

Bottom Line

Mark April 30, 2026 on your calendar, call 980-256-7952 to schedule, and gather your documents now. A few hours at this clinic can translate into years of meaningful property tax savings for you or a loved one in Mecklenburg County.
