Homebuyers in the Philadelphia area are facing an ongoing challenge as housing affordability continues to be a concern.

A recent report from the residential real estate brokerage Redfin highlights the growing difficulty of affording a typical home in the region. Data from August reveals that residents in the Philadelphia metropolitan area now need an annual income of over $75,000 to afford a median-priced home, marking a significant 16% increase compared to the same period last year.

The median sale price for homes in the broader metro area, encompassing Philadelphia and Delaware counties, stands at $275,000.

The situation is even more challenging in the suburbs.

In the Montgomery County metropolitan area, which includes Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester counties, the affordability threshold for a typical home has risen dramatically. Prospective buyers now need an annual income of $130,866 to afford such a home. This figure exceeds the national average and represents an alarming nearly 30% year-over-year increase in this suburban metro area.

These developments underscore the ongoing challenges facing homebuyers in the Philadelphia region, where the dream of homeownership is becoming increasingly elusive due to rising home prices and income requirements.
