If you live in North Carolina and want to lower your energy bills, there is now money available in every county in the state. Governor Josh Stein and the state Department of Environmental Quality announced that the Energy Saver North Carolina program is fully launched statewide — the first program of its kind to do so in the entire country.

How Much Money Is Available?

Eligible homeowners can receive two types of rebates:

  • Up to $16,000 for home efficiency improvements such as insulation, air sealing, and HVAC system upgrades
  • Up to $14,000 in additional rebates for high-efficiency electric appliances, including heat pump water heaters and electric stoves

Combined, that is up to $30,000 in total rebates for qualified households. The state estimates these upgrades can lower monthly utility bills by up to $80 — that is about $1,000 in savings every year.

Who Is Eligible?

The Energy Saver program is designed for income-eligible households. Rebate amounts are tied to household income levels, with the largest amounts going to lower-income families. You must own and occupy your home to qualify.

What Does the Program Cover?

The upgrades covered include:

  • Home insulation and air sealing
  • Heating and cooling (HVAC) system replacements
  • Heat pump water heaters
  • Electric stoves and ranges
  • Other energy-efficient electric appliances

Why This Matters

North Carolina is the first state in the nation to fully roll out this type of program in every county. DEQ Secretary Reid Wilson said: "Eligible North Carolina families can lower their utility bills by up to $80 per month, and their homes will be more comfortable."

How to Apply

Since the program is now available in all 100 counties, visit the North Carolina DEQ Energy Saver page at deq.nc.gov or contact your county's local energy office to find the application process for your area. Funding is limited, so apply as soon as possible.

Bottom Line

Whether you need new insulation, a better heating system, or updated appliances, this program could cover a significant portion of the cost. If you own a home in North Carolina and your income qualifies, this is one of the best rebate opportunities available right now.
