If you own a home in the Oklahoma City area, there is money available right now to help you upgrade your roof — for free.

The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) launched a program called Strengthen Oklahoma Homes. It gives homeowners grants of up to $10,000 to replace or upgrade their roofs to a standard called FORTIFIED. A FORTIFIED roof is designed to stay attached to your home even in strong winds, tornadoes, and hail.

Why This Matters

Oklahoma has some of the highest homeowner insurance rates in the country. When your roof is FORTIFIED, your insurance company may lower your rates — because a stronger roof means less damage in a storm. That means this grant could save you money twice: once when you get the roof, and again on your insurance bill.

Your home must be in one of these eight ZIP codes:

• 73051 – Lexington/Slaughterville
• 73065 – Newcastle
• 73069 – Norman
• 73111 – East Oklahoma City
• 73127 – West Oklahoma City
• 73129 – Southeast Oklahoma City
• 73135 – Southeast OKC / I-240 area

Your home must also:

• Be in good condition, or have damage from a recent storm (tornado, windstorm, or hail)
• Have active homeowners insurance that includes wind coverage
• Pass an eligibility inspection to confirm it can receive a FORTIFIED designation

Go to strengthenoklahomahomes.com and complete a quick survey to see if you qualify. The OID wants to give out 1,000 grants this year and is actively looking for new applicants — especially in those eight ZIP codes.
