South Carolina Homeowners Can Get Up to $7,500 for Hurricane Protection

South Carolina homeowners can now apply for grants to protect their homes against hurricanes. The SC Safe Home Mitigation Program reopened for applications on February 10, 2026.

How Much Money Can You Get?

The program offers two types of grants:

  • Matching grants: Up to $6,000 (you pay half, the state pays half)
  • Non-matching grants: Up to $7,500 (the state pays the full amount)

What Can You Use the Money For?

Homeowners can use these grants to make their homes stronger during hurricanes:

  • Window and door protection
  • Roof-to-wall connections
  • New roofs that meet FORTIFIED standards (special hurricane-resistant roofs)

Why This Matters

Making these improvements can help lower your home insurance costs. Florida homeowners who use similar programs can save money on their insurance premiums.

More than 600 South Carolina families received grants from this program in 2025. The state added almost $9 million in new funding thanks to support from state lawmakers.

Who Qualifies?

South Carolina homeowners can apply. The program is designed to help families protect their homes from hurricane damage.

How to Apply

Applications are now open! Visit the SC Department of Insurance website to apply.

The program opens for applications twice a year, so don't wait. Apply as soon as possible to secure your funding.

Important Dates

  • Application Period: Now open (started February 10, 2026)
  • Deadline: Apply soon - funding is limited and given on a first-come, first-served basis

The SC Safe Home program has been helping South Carolina families since 2007. It's similar to programs in other states where homeowners can get money to protect their homes from storms.
