Scituate Homeowners May Get Forgivable Loans Up to $50,000 for Repairs

Some Scituate, Rhode Island homeowners may soon be able to get help paying for needed home repairs.

The Scituate Town Council approved entering a contract with the Providence Revolving Fund. The group is expected to help the town apply for and run a Community Development Block Grant repair program.

How much help may be available?

The program is expected to use forgivable loans. According to the Providence Revolving Fund, forgivable loan grants can be worth up to $50,000 for a single-family or two-family home.

Homes with more units may be able to receive up to $75,000, depending on the program rules.

Who may qualify?

Applicants are expected to need income under 80% of the area median income. The Providence Revolving Fund said about 25% of Scituate households may qualify.

The program is meant for lower-income households that need repairs but may not be able to use normal bank financing.

What repairs can be covered?

The program is for home repair work. The Providence Revolving Fund said many eligible homes need major maintenance because repair costs have become too high for fixed-income homeowners.

The group also said it provides a construction manager to help make sure work is done correctly and fairly.

The town and Providence Revolving Fund still need to complete the local program steps. The program is expected to be first come, first served once it is available.
