Texas property owners in wildfire-prone areas may be able to get help paying for work that lowers fire risk around homes and land.

Texas A&M Forest Service is accepting applications for wildfire mitigation grants. The programs help private landowners and municipalities reduce hazardous fuel, such as thick brush and vegetation that can make wildfires spread faster.

How much money is available?

For the Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant, eligible applicants can receive:

  • Up to $750 per acre for hand-cutting treatments.
  • Up to $2,000 per acre for heavy equipment treatment.
  • Up to $1,500 per acre for a combination of treatments.

Prescribed fire grants are also available, with reimbursement rates from $22.50 to $30 per acre.

Who can apply?

The Mechanical Fuel Reduction Grant is open to private landowners and municipalities in 39 Central Texas counties. The goal is to reduce wildfire risk and lower the chance of home loss from fire.

Prescribed Fire Grants are available for private landowners and municipalities that use approved prescribed burning to reduce hazardous fuel loads and protect communities.

Application deadline

Applications are open now and will be accepted through July 14, 2026.

How to apply

Landowners should review the Texas A&M Forest Service grant details, confirm their property is in an eligible area, and submit the required application before the deadline.

Because these grants are reimbursement-based, applicants should confirm what work is eligible before starting a project or hiring a contractor.
