USDA Offers Seniors Up to $10,000 for Rural Home Repairs

May 22, 2026

The USDA Section 504 Home Repair program can help low-income homeowners fix unsafe homes. Seniors age 62 and older may qualify for grants up to $10,000. Other eligible homeowners may qualify for a 1% loan up to $40,000. Some people may be able to combine both for up to $50,000 in total help.

Who can apply?

  • You must own and live in the home.
  • The home must be in an eligible rural area.
  • Your household income must usually be below 50% of the area median income.
  • Grant applicants must be age 62 or older and unable to afford a loan.

What repairs can be covered?

The money is for health and safety repairs. This may include roofs, plumbing, wiring, heating systems, septic problems, ramps, safer bathrooms, and other repairs that make the home safe to live in.

How much money is available?

  • Grant: up to $10,000 for eligible seniors.
  • Loan: up to $40,000 at 1% interest.
  • Combined help: up to $50,000 if approved for both.

How to apply

Apply through the official USDA Rural Development office for your area. Homeowners should be ready to show proof of ownership, income, repair needs, and contractor estimates. Start at the USDA Section 504 Home Repair Loans and Grants page or contact your local USDA Rural Development office.

Deadline or window

This is an ongoing federal program, but money depends on local funding. Apply as soon as possible because funds can run out in some areas.

Important: The USDA does not charge an upfront fee just to apply. Avoid websites that promise guaranteed approval.
