Wisconsin Homeowners Can Get Up to $14,000 for Energy Upgrades

Wisconsin homeowners can now use federal Home Energy Rebates through Focus on Energy.

The program includes two options: Home Efficiency Rebates, also called HOMES, and Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates, also called HEAR. Focus on Energy says both programs are now available.

How much money is available?

The largest rebate is through HEAR. A household can receive up to $14,000 total, depending on income and project cost.

HEAR can cover up to 100% of project costs for households below 80% of area median income, up to the $14,000 program cap. Households between 80% and 150% of area median income can receive up to 50% of project costs, also capped at $14,000.

Some product limits include:

  • Up to $8,000 for an ENERGY STAR electric heat pump for heating and cooling.
  • Up to $1,750 for an ENERGY STAR electric heat pump water heater.
  • Up to $4,000 for an electrical panel upgrade.
  • Up to $2,500 for electrical wiring.
  • Up to $1,600 for insulation, ventilation, and air sealing.

The HOMES program can also help pay for energy-saving projects. For single-family homes, rebates can reach up to $10,000 for households below 80% of area median income when the project is expected to cut energy use by 35% or more.

Who may qualify?

Wisconsin residents in single-family homes and multifamily buildings may qualify. HEAR is limited to households at or below 150% of area median income. HOMES is open to all homeowners, but rebate amounts depend on income and expected energy savings.

What upgrades are covered?

Covered work can include heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, insulation, air sealing, electrical panels, wiring, and certain kitchen or laundry appliances.

For HOMES, homeowners need a home energy assessment first. The assessment identifies which upgrades qualify and how much energy the project is expected to save.

How to apply

  1. Start at the Focus on Energy IRA Home Energy Rebates page.
  2. Complete the income qualification step.
  3. Choose either a registered contractor or qualifying equipment.
  4. Complete the project according to program rules.
  5. The rebate may appear as an instant discount, invoice discount, or mailed check depending on the project.

Bottom line: Wisconsin homeowners can apply now for a specific rebate program with clear dollar limits and income rules.
