PHFA Updates on PAHAF Aid to Homeowners in October

In a recent announcement from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) has shared encouraging updates on their ongoing efforts to support homeowners affected by the pandemic. The initiative, backed by a $350 million allocation from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, aims to mitigate the financial impacts of COVID-19 on homeowners by preventing mortgage delinquencies, defaults, foreclosures, and loss of essential services.

From June to October, the PHFA program has demonstrated consistent progress, disbursing an additional $12.7 million in October alone, bringing the total households assisted to 13,595. Notably, $129.8 million remains available for distribution. The agency is actively urging applicants to re-register through the new software implemented by PHFA, streamlining processing steps and ensuring the submission of up-to-date documents.

Utilizing various communication channels, including emails, mailed letters, phone calls, and community events, PHFA is encouraging applicants to engage in the re-registration process. The media has been called upon to amplify this message. Applicants can re-register through the website or contact the PAHAF call center for assistance, with the process taking approximately 30 minutes.

It’s emphasized that homeowners facing adverse actions like foreclosure or utility shut-off should promptly notify the PAHAF call center to prioritize their applications for eligibility determination and fund disbursement.

Robin Wiessmann, the Executive Director and CEO of PHFA, expressed optimism about the impact of their outreach efforts, citing positive feedback from homeowners who have benefited from the Pennsylvania Homeowner Assistance Fund. The transition of program management to an in-house team earlier this year has enabled PHFA to expedite payments and enhance overall program efficiency.

Current PAHAF applicants are Pennsylvania homeowners who have experienced financial hardship due to the pandemic, while new applications are temporarily on hold until the existing pool is processed. The program is mandated to disburse the entire $350 million by September 2025.

PHFA‘s commitment to affordable homeownership and rental housing demonstrated over its 50-year history, aligns with its mission to provide financial assistance responsibly. The agency’s initiatives, fueled by fees and securities rather than public tax dollars, reflect its dedication to supporting communities across the state.
