Program Overview

The Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant helps veterans with certain service-connected disabilities adapt a home owned by them or a family member they live with. For FY 2026, the grant amount is up to $25,350. Eligible adaptations include special entrances/exits, bathroom modifications for accessibility, lowering kitchen cabinets and sinks, widening hallways and doorways, installing handrails and grab bars, and other modifications necessary for independent living. Veterans can use this grant up to 3 times with the total not exceeding the maximum. The home must be in the United States, its territories, or Puerto Rico.

Eligibility Requirements

• Veteran or service member with qualifying service-connected disability:\n - Blindness in both eyes with visual acuity of 20/200 or less\n - Loss or loss of use of both hands\n - Certain severe burn injuries\n - Certain respiratory injuries requiring long-term medication or treatment

Additional Requirements

• VA rating decision showing qualifying disability\n• DD-214 or proof of military service\n• Property ownership or family member's home where veteran resides\n• Adaptation plan from contractor

How to Apply

1. Obtain VA rating decision showing qualifying disability\n2. Complete VA Form 26-4555\n3. Submit application with adaptation plan from contractor\n4. VA reviews eligibility and plan\n5. VA approves modifications and releases funds\n6. Complete adaptations with approved contractor\n7. VA inspects work before final payment
