The Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant helps veterans with certain severe service-connected disabilities adapt or purchase a specially adapted home. For FY 2026, the grant amount is up to $130,780. The grant can be used to build, buy, or modify a home to meet the veteran's needs. Eligible modifications include widening doorways, installing ramps, lowering countertops and cabinets, adding roll-in showers, and other accessibility features. Veterans can use the grant up to 3 times, with the total amount not exceeding the maximum allowable. The home must be in the United States, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
• Veteran or service member with qualifying service-connected disability:\n - Loss or loss of use of both legs\n - Loss or loss of use of both arms\n - Blindness in both eyes with visual acuity of 5/200 or less\n - Loss of one leg + residuals of organic disease/injury\n - Loss or loss of use of one leg + loss or loss of use of one arm\n - Certain severe burn injuries\n - Certain respiratory/breathing injuries requiring ventilator
• VA rating decision showing qualifying disability\n• DD-214 or proof of military service\n• Property ownership or intent to build/purchase\n• Certification from licensed architect or contractor for modifications
1. Gather VA rating decision showing qualifying disability\n2. Complete VA Form 26-4555 (Application for SAH/SHA Grant)\n3. Submit application online, by mail, or through VA regional office\n4. VA will review eligibility and schedule home visit if needed\n5. Work with VA-approved architect/contractor for design\n6. VA approves plans and releases funds\n7. Complete construction/modifications\n8. VA inspects work before final payment
