Housing Repair Loans and Grants Program Helps San Diego Homeowners

The Housing Repair Loans and Grants Program offers loans and grants to San Diego homeowners who need to repair their homes. Roof repair and heating, electrical, and plumbing systems are among the health and safety issues addressed by the program. In eligible regions of the county, a low-interest, deferred loan or a grant can be used to repair single-family homes, or a grant can be used to repair mobile homes.

Eligible areas include the unincorporated areas of San Diego County, CA, and the cities of Del Mar, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, Poway, and Solana Beach. There are certain requirements that must be met to be eligible for the Housing Repair Loans and Grants Program. To get home repair assistance under this program the homeowner, must live in the house or mobile home and have a household income below 80 percent of the San Diego County Area Median Income. Applicants may be able to receive a low-interest deferred loan of up to $25,000.00 for a single-family residence and up to a $12,000.00 grant for a mobile home. Deferred loans with a 3% simple interest form are due and payable when the home changes title through sale, transfer, death or when the homeowner no longer lives in the home, or in 30 years, whichever comes first.

San Diego also offers assistance to first-time homebuyers through the Down Payment and Closing Cost Assistance Program. This program offers deferred payment loans available for low-income, first-time buyers. Participants must contribute a minimum of 1 percent of the home purchase price and have a household income that is less than 80 percent of our Area Median Income (AMI). To participate in the program, you must get a first trust deed loan approval from one of the mortgage lenders on this pre-approved lender list.
