Homeowners who prefer outright ownership of their solar panels aren’t left out; the city will support qualifying homeowners in applying for state and federal subsidies and bridge loans. According to Rohit Aggarwala, the Commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection, the primary aim of this program is to present appealing packages to homeowners who have been underserved by the private sector in New York City.

This trailblazing initiative, a first-of-its-kind for a large city, is scheduled for roll-out over the next five years. Kick-started with $1 million in seed money from the Adams administration, the program will hinge on grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The city has plans to apply for federal aid in the upcoming months and may start reaching out to potential applicants by year’s end.

Despite currently ranking sixth among U.S. cities in total installed solar capacity, New York faces obstacles in achieving its ambitious solar targets. Barriers such as installation challenges and regulatory compliance will necessitate more targeted policies. Currently, the City Council is deliberating a bill that aims to alleviate some city fire code requirements.
