Tarrant County Residents Can Get Help with Delinquent Property Taxes

Tarrant County residents can get financial assistance from the Texas Homeowner Assistance Fund Program with their delinquent property taxes. This program, administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, is part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is a $1.9 trillion coronavirus rescue plan aimed at assisting the US in recovering from the devastating economic and health repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $25,000.00 that can cover delinquent property taxes and mortgage payments.

“The release of these funds is very timely and has already helped taxpayers in a test county in Texas, and Tarrant is an early adopter to benefit our taxpayers,” Wendy Burgess, Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector said.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE TEXAS HOMEOWNER ASSISTANCE FUND PROGRAM?

To qualify, homeowners must:

  • Own and occupy a home in Texas as a primary residence 
  • Experienced a qualified financial hardship after January 21, 2020, such as lost income or increased expenses due to the pandemic
  • Have a household income at or below 100% Area Median Income (AMI) or 100% of the median income for the United States, whichever is greater
  • And also have fallen behind on one or more of the following payments:
    • Mortgage loans
    • Property taxes
    • Property insurance
    • HOA/condo association fees

Homeowners are required to submit the following documents when applying: identification card, mortgage statement, proof of occupancy (such as a utility bill), income documentation (such as pay stubs), and signed program documents. Furthermore, payments are sent directly to the mortgage servicer or property charge payee (tax authority, insurance company, or HOA) once the homeowner’s application is approved. Tarrant County also administers a Home Owner Rehabilitation program aimed to help Tarrant County residents living outside the boundaries of the cities of Fort Worth, Arlington, and Grand Prairie.
